The SMART fare increase and Transfer Policy Change will go into effect on December 1, 2009. For details please see the links below.
Fare Increase
The decision was made after public hearings were held throughout Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties to get public feedback on the potential fare increase. Of the feedback received, nearly 40% of comments supported a fare increase in order to minimize possible cuts to service.
The fares for seniors and disabled will NOT change on both Fixed Route and Connector and will remain at the current fare levels.
Student and youth fares will NOT change for Fixed Route, however, fares on Connector will increase.
The documents below provide details about all fares changes.

Transfer Policy Change
In conjunction with the fare increase, the new transfer policy will change prohibit same route different direction transfers (SRDD) for full fare transfers.
The purpose of a transfer ticket is to allow riders to reach a destination by using more than one bus. It is not intended for round trip travel. The former SMART policy allowed a regular transfer to be used on an unlimited basis for three hours from the time of purchase, and approximately 28 percent of the regular fare transfers sold were being used for round trip travel, rather than paying for a return fare. Under the new policy, regular fare transfers issued on a route cannot be used on that same route in the opposite direction.
