What are the job requirements for a Small Bus(Connector) Driver?

  • Valid Michigan’s Driver’s License.
  • Less than four points on driving record.
  • No suspensions or restrictions on driving record in the last five years.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Successfully completes written and oral examination.
  • Meets physical requirements as specified by the Federal Department of Transportation for Coach Operators.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend written directives and service information.
  • Ability to perform arithmetical calculations and maintain reports.
  • Ability to work in a time-structured environment under minimal direct supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to work with the public.
  • Ability to exercise sound and quick judgment in solving problems.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude helpful.
  • Ability to read a street map and find unknown locations quickly.
  • Knowledge of the service areas of the assigned terminal – Major streets and landmarks, street numbering system, etc.
  • Ability to communicate by telephone, two-way radio and in person in clear, fluent English in a courteous and professional manner with customers and co-workers.

Can someone with a conviction record work at SMART?

A conviction record does not exclude someone from working at SMART. The decision to hire is made on a case-by-case basis. However, all applicants must disclose the existence of convictions. If you fail to do so, you will be disqualified.

What is the rate of pay for drivers?

To view the rate of pay, visit the SMART Career Center and view open jobs for both Fixed Route and Connector drivers.  These are all full-time positions (40 hours per week) and are paid on a weekly basis.

What is the difference between Fixed Route and Connector?

Fixed Route is the large bus that runs down major streets and picks up passengers at designated bus stops. Fixed Route hours of operation are 7 days a week, approximately 23 hours per day. Connector is the smaller bus that is curb-to-curb service with the primary focus on transporting older adults and persons with disabilities. The hours of operation for Connector bus are Monday through Friday from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
